  1. To me mental toughness being in control of your emotions at certain times, being focused, determined, able to make achievable goals for themselves, know their limits, etc. It is all about the person themselves in a way and being able to control and understand things.
An example of mental toughness personally is by being able to celebrate a good play, score, etc in the game and then snapping right back into the game and moving on. By doing this it doesn't allow the emotions to affect the game. You can just move on and change states of mind when it is needed. After the game is over then more celebrating can be done on all the great things that happened and like the statement agon says: its the struggle that makes the prize worthwhile.
If i were to create mental toughness in a team or player I would first help them set small reachable goals to improve their self-confidence and self-efficiency. This way confidence can be built and they will become more positive so that way they can push through the rough times of the game. They can then learn how to control their emotions on the court/field/etc.
Mental toughness is related to ethics because it is about being able to be strong in bad games, poor plays etc. Also it is being able to not gloat too much on good things, being able to make personal goals they know are reachable, being a good team player etc. Mental toughness is good in so many ways, I believe that its about being a strong individual and withstanding the bad things that people can do such a cheating, taking drugs, etc. The people with mental toughness can withstand those things and make it on their own.

  2. Mental toughness is when athletes is going to the match and he/she is confident in himself/herself. Thinking only about winning a match. All the things around does not interrupt athlete no matter what. Do not get down no matter what and fight to the end.
When I was playing final match in Uzbekistan and there was the whole stadium cheering for the other girl and plus referee was helping her. It was very hard people were screaming while the point and referee was cheeting all the time. It was very hard match for me because everything was against me. But won this match because I was mentally tough and I did not let them make me down. I tried not to listen what they were saying and screaming I did my own thing. I tried to imagine that there is nobody around me and that only me and the opponent on the court. I played safely and so I was trying not to give a chance to referee to lie.
To built mental toughness is not very hard in individual sport. First of all you have to become self confident. Try not to pay attention to the things what is around. Try to focus on every single ball. Try to imagine that you are the only one on the match and your opponent that way you do not get distracted.

  3. In my own words, mental toughness is the ability an athlete has in order to focus their thoughts and energy on the task at hand in order to win during a competition or better their skills during practice. Like we discussed in class, it is a mixture of concentration, tolerance for frustration, determination, persistence and confidence.
Swimming requires unbelievable amounts of mental toughness. I have had countless experiences during competition where I have had to look deep inside myself in order to be mentally tough enough to win a race. The moment I remember the most was this year at the WAC championships when I was in one of the last heats of prelims in the 50 free. First of all, the 50 free is over so quickly that the most minor mistakes can be detrimental. In this instance all of the other vandal sprinters had gone very slow times, making me second-guess my taper. However, I had to make sure that I kept my confidence level high and focused in on my own race and no one else’s. I went on to break the school record and take 12th place.
If I were a coach trying to develop more mental toughness in an athlete of mine I would want to address whether I feel they are confident in themselves as a player and a person. A player who is confident in not only their skills but their life will be able to focus on their sport without distraction. I would also administer positive reinforcement to reward them for their good efforts during practice and competition so they develop more determination to get better and mentally focus on what they are doing.
Mental toughness is related to ethics because some coaches perceive mental toughness is only about how an athlete can handle physical pain. This can become unethical because those kind of coaches can eventually run their athletes to the ground so that they either become injured or the players become so consumed with the sport that they begin to do unethical things like taking steroids.

  4. Mental Toughness is when athlete is focused on his/her competition and do not let anybody to ruin it in any situation. Athlete will fight do everything to win and fight as hard as he/she can.
In my own experience I had one hard match where I had to be very mentally strong.I was playing a match against the girl who was in top 10 in Russia and everybody told me there is no way you can bit her, but I had self confident and I told myself there is no way I will give up and I won that match even thought nobody believed in me. I think in order to get mentally tough you have to be self confident so that when you go to the match you know that you can win. FOcus and energizing is very important as well. You need to be very focus in every match so you do not get distracted when you in the court.

  5. Mental toughness is having the natural or developed psychological edge that enables you to generally cope better than your opponents with the many demands (e.g., competition, training, lifestyle) that are placed on you as a performer and specifically, to be more consistent and better than your opponents in remaining determined, focused, confident, resilient, and in control under pressure. From my view point to reach a mental toughness you have to keep some mental stage pretty high such as a self confidence, motivation, and focus and composure/handle pressure.

I remember when I was in competing in Puerto Rico for the national time. I was sick two days prior to the competition and my coach used some mental toughness to make me still focus in my goal. He tried to I develop a control of Negative Self-Talk: Reframe “stinking thinking” into positive task oriented.

You can develop a good mental thought by creating a program for success ahead of time with positive affirmations and expectations:
    • Expect the best from yourself; affirm what it is you are going to do to be successful
Confident goal oriented statements starting with “I will, I can, I am going to
Focus on those things you want to occur, rather than things you’re afraid might go wrong. You or your team can this method to develop a better mental toughness.

I think, coach can use mental toughness in order athletes exceed their athletes skills causing some injures. So this technique can have unethical side. As a result, mental toughness is also related with ethical and unethical values.

  6. Mental toughness in sport is when an athlete is able to clear their mind and fight through any emotions to focus on the game that they are competing in. I feel that there are many different ways to have mental toughness in that everyone handles different situations in a different way.
An example of mental toughness is when a family member dies right before a big game. The athlete must put all of their emotions aside and focus on the game ahead. This has been done by a few of the best athletes of our generation like Brett Farve and Michael Jordan.
The best way to teach an athlete how to have mental toughness is for them to experience first hand a difficult situation to deal with. I think that as a coach, you can help to prepare them by helping them become confident in their skills along with being a good role model. I think that they will learn many of their skills and additudes from the people around them that they look up to. If you are a good teacher and they can look up to you, then this will help them learn to be mentally tough.
I think that mental toughness does tie into ethics because of the impact it has on the players playing the game. I think that by having mental toughness, the athlete will know how to compete using sportsmanship and class. Mentally tough players will be better trained mentally causing them to use better judgement about their values.

  7. Mental toughness is having the emotional control to overcome mistakes, bad calls, distractions, and focus on the task at hand and how to complete it.

An example, for me, was in hockey, and it was a teammate of mine. We were playing our rival team, and the refs were calling everything on us, and nothing on them. Obviously frustrating, but thus far I was keeping my cool. The next shift, a skater from the opposing team completely cheap shotted me from behind right in front of the ref. He watched it, we made eye contact, and still no call.He was waiting for a retaliation, but didn't get it so didn't all anything. After this, I got mad. I was yelling at the ref, yelling at the other player, pretty much throwing a temper tantrum on the ice. No "unsportman-like" penalty was called on me, even though it probably should have been. I went back to my bench pissed off. A younger teammate of mine came and just sat next to me. They waited a sec, told me get over it, said let's kick some ass, let them play dirty if they want. Just the way they stayed calm in the situation that I couldn't, helped me realize that being angry about it wouldn't help anything. I was still pissed but instead of yelling and making a scene, our team scored. We got them where the refs couldn't make the bad call (unless they wanted it to be completely obvious). My teammate showed mental toughness and helped me refocus.

To develop mental toughness in an individual sport, you can train yourself. When you feel yourself getting distracted, you remind yourself of what you're supposed to be doing. When you get down on yourself and start doubting your abilities, you can try and stop that negativity and think about things you're good at. these types of things can help you "train" to be mentally tough.

Mental toughness is related to ethics because we have to use our moral values when "being mentally tough". We have to be honest and practice sportsmanship to have real confidence in our play. Our moral beliefs help us focus on how to better ourselves. And being mentally tough is all about better ourselves. Focus harder, believe in yourself, etc.

  8. Mental toughness to me means that nothing and no one can affect your mentality and you stay strong in any situation. No matter what happens or how bad things get, your ability to keep focus and overcome is mental toughness. I played American Legion baseball every summer and we always had tough battles with one team. In a game on our home field our pitcher got lit up and the opponents hit five home runs and scored 8 in a matter of three innings before he got pulled. We ended up losing the game and splitting the series with them. The next time we met with them it was on their home turf and the same pitcher that got lit up by them was in rotation to throw again. We had confidence in him but we had to hope that he had the same confidence in himself and that he would put the last outing behind him. He displayed excellent mental toughness and although the team chanted about the last game, our pitcher ignored it and threw his game. He ended up throwing 6 solid scoreless innings that game and picked up the win. I think that in order to develop mental toughness it is necessary to get into situations that could possibly break your concentration and lead to failure. Concentration is something that takes practice when things are present to break it. Tolerance for frustration will come after being frustrated to the point of giving up. Even if frustration beats you a time or two, tolerance will come. Determination and persistence will help you overcome hard times and provide the self confidence to stay mentally tough. Some prime moral values related to mental toughness are helping people, staying positive, staying strong in situations.

  9. Mental toughness is one of the most important things to have as an athlete. Its helps your performance, and helps you play at a high level throughout the game. If you have mental toughness you are that much stronger as an athlete. I can remember when I was in high school, and we were playing our rival at their gym. They were screaming the whole time, and it was a very hostile environment. I played one of my best games, and we won the game. You can develop mental toughness in a team by winning games, especially on the road against good teams.

  10. Mental toughness is somethin that you have inside you that you cant just get lol its something that pushes you to that next level. Mental touchness helps you wit yo performance an focus on an off the court... One time we were playin for the state game an hit was poppn loud an it was hard to focus, but my mental touchness kicked in an i had one of the best games in my last game of high skool basketball.

  12. Mental Toughness is the ability to concentrate throughout a game, tolerating frustration when you're loosing, a player has self confidence that he/she is going to win regardless of ranking and playing with intensity throughout a game.

When I was 14 years old, I was playing the "West Coast Championships" at Sacramento during that summer. I had broken finger and blisters all on my right hand. Although I had the disadvantages and my mom forcing me to withdraw, I still competed against some of the top players in the nation. I played with determination and intensity throughout the tournament and as a result, I earned 5th place.

Mental toughness is related to ethics when it comes to sportsmanship. If a player has poor mental game while loosing, he might start trash talking to the opponent but if the player has a strong mental game, he/she will not get frustrated.

  13. Mental toughness is focusing only on the things that you can control, before and during competition, and not being worried about the things that you can't control. The things that you can control hopefully have been practiced before competition. Mental toughness stems from being confident in what you do. Confidence comes from mindfull repitition in each task that you will perform during competition.
As a volleyball coach, I do my best to help my athletes become confident in what they do. All we are concerned with is the improvement issue. We get good at what we do. I try to teach technique that is simple and has proven to be the best. And we strive to be the best at a few things instead of being good or ok at many things. The more they become confident in these few things their mental toughness builds. Then when the ebbs and flows of the game come, we are able to sustain flow for longer periods of time and are able to keep ourselves from getting caught up with negative that happens. This has worked with several teams that I have been a part of, one of which went on to win a national championship against a much larger, more athletic, more powerfull, and thankfully, more emotional team. When they were good, they were really good. When they were bad, they let themselves get pretty low and because of our mental toughness we were steady all the way through. 2005 NCAA D1 championships.

  14. 1)to me, mental toughness is being able to accomplish something you have not been able to do, or go harder/past a level that you have not been pushed to.
    2) an example of this is when i was in high school wrestling. as a freshmen on the varsity team my coach new i would struggle but kept making me wrestle people who were beyond my skill level, people who pretty much beat me really bad. he knew that my learning curve and toughness would sky rocket by the end of the year and would be i very tough wrestler in the years to come.
    3) i think you can develop mental toughness by being challenged to do something you could not accomplish in the past, you can develop mental toughness by doing one extra rep. that you couldnt do the day before.

  15. 1. Mental toughness is being able to push your mind to another level. Being able to go above and beyond the standards that you have set for yourself is a form of mental toughness. Mental toughness is being able to stay focused at the task at hand even when there is outside distractions.
    2. I showed mental toughness in a football game my junior year in high school when calls weren’t going my way. There where many questionable calls, such as pass interference and holding. Being one of the better players on my team, the opponent’s goal was to throw me out of my game by holding me when I was running my routes on purpose. I didn’t argue with the referee and stayed focus throughout the game, I ended up making some good catches and our team won the game.
    3. You develop mental toughness in a team by pushing them passed the point when most would give up. There is a saying that your mind always gives up before your body. Conditioning as a team and working together helps build mental toughness in your team.
    4. Mental toughness goes hand in hand with sportsmanship. If you are mentally tough you will treat your opponent and the game with respect. If you are apart of the idealistic perspective of competition you are more likely to be mentally tough.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Mental toughness in my own words would be not letting emotions get the best of you during a sport. To be able to focus when the fans are unbearable, or if the other player is throwing you cheap shots. Pretty much being able to excel through all the pain, adversity, and pressure.

I have had many experiences where i have had great mental toughness, its just something i have always had. But im not going to use an example from myself. Semi-final game, senior year, in state, we were huge underdogs playing against a much better, WAY taller, and the team picked to win the state title. The game came down to the last 5 seconds of overtime, it was tied up, and they had the ball on their side of the court by their bench. They throw it in and there best player takes a dribble and our point guard picks him and rushes down for a lay in and gets fouled as the buzzer goes off.. it was a one and one oppurtunity at the free throw line. All he had to do was make it and it would be the first time in our school history that we made it to the state title game. He takes his dribbles at the line, all the players at half court with no time on clock, and the opponents crowd was so loud i couldnt even hear my team mate right next to me. He sinks it, nothing but net.

Well, i think that mental toughness is developed at a young age not based on sports but in life in general. But for basketball, if i was coach, it would just be making the team or player disipline, especially in the off season and in practices, so that when game time comes around, it is easy. It is actually really hard for me to explain this for some reason. :s

As far as ethics go, i guess i would say that sportsmanship and gamesmanship would reflect someones mental toughness, especially in a loss. If you are a poor loser, you arent very mentally tough, and that loss could effect that person later in the season cuz he or she let it get to them.

  17. To me, mental toughness is the ability to block out all distraction and other things going on and being able to focus on any task at hand, while not letting new events interfere with your current objective.
A great mental toughness feat i've seen was my buddy Cameron. He was running the 3200, and in the middle of his race vomitted on the track, he didn't break his stride or stop, just sort of turned his head to the infield and kept on going.
I think a person can development mental toughness by training with distractions around them, and get used to not focusing on other things going on, like how the football team will practice with the loud music and cheering coming from the speakers.
I think mental toughness relates to ethics, because an opponent can try to to break your mental toughness by means that are looked down upon in sport.

  18. Mental toughness is a concept that holds great personal definition. It can be applied to many things. To me it means the ability/strength to persevere through hard times. Perseverance is never easy and one does this because they have a goal in mind and a drive to get there. To be mentally tough one needs to be able to endure failure and criticism. They need to know how to use this to benefit them and better themselves. Failure is not a permanent state.

Injuries are a great example of mental toughness in competition because an individual is given the choice to sit out and rest or continue to play. At a volleyball tournament our setter jammed her finger really bad. She had to sit out the rest of the game because she couldn’t bend two of her fingers. But the next game, although she was in great pain, she taped her fingers and played anyway. She was our best setter and she wanted us to win that tournament. She had ambition, a goal in mind and showed great perseverance.

Mental toughness can be demonstrated by helping develop good self confidence and self efficacy in players, as well as tolerating their frustrations. This will take away the doubt and low self worth that can affect us all. Also, providing motivation and goals to reach, making players always wanting to improve and better themselves and their teammates.

Mental toughness is related to ethics because it includes respecting one’s self and others and promoting a higher level of play. It does this without using cheap methods or unethical techniques.

  19. Mental toughness for an athlete is strength and endurance during competition. It is the focus and drive that one has to accomplish their goal, even when the situation is tough and demanding mentally and physically. During class, we discussed that mental toughness encompasses several aspects like determination, concentration, persistence, the ability to tolerate frustration, and confidence in what you are doing.

In football, I must practice mental toughness 24/7. The game is demanding mentally, physically, and emotionally. I must be strong enough to endure the tackling, sprinting, running routes, memorizing plays, and overall just playing the game to win. During the season, we experienced a few tough losses. When the game is going bad and we are losing, I must maintain my mental toughness in order to handle the stress, frustration, and disappointment. Maintaining mental toughness in those situations is a job because it takes a lot out of you. I know my team and coaches experience the same feelings. Another example of my mental toughness comes into play when I have been injured, it takes mental toughness to overcome the injury and commit to rehab and recovery.

To instill mental toughness in a team or player I will first address their current mental state, finding out which areas need the attention the most. It could be their lack of concentration, motivation, confidence, etc. I will talk to them about the importance of it, how to attain it, and that practice makes perfect. They will need to know that we will not always do the best, but we must hold firm to being tough in all situations. One main aspect of mental toughness is confidence in what they are trying to do. They must be confident in their skills, their developing skills, and their team, etc. They must also have their priorities in orders and as far as what they hope to accomplish with their sport and physically ability.

Mental toughness can be associated, in a sense, with unethical behavior. Determination is an aspect of mental toughness, and many athletes and coaches will do anything as a result of their determination. I know some coaches who associate mental toughness to pain tolerance. This pressure can cause athletes to go to extreme measures to prove or show that they are tough mentally and physically. For instance, they may turn to steroids to aid in their toughness. On the other hand, mental toughness has it’s ethical aspects as well. When we strive to be mentally tough and care about our sport and abilities, we will do everything in our power to abide by the rules and not jeopardize of place in the game. We will aim to better ourselves, focus, and show sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is one of the main qualities an athlete will have if they are mentally tough. It is so much easier to talk bad about players, opponents, and others when the team isn’t doing so well. Being mentally tough will help you stay away from those unethical behaviors.

  20. Mental toughness is the ability to master the non physical aspects of sporting events. Being able to make sure that that your level of competition isn’t affected by fans or other competitors. When I was on my junior high school wrestling team and one of my competitors had been nationally ranked the year before while preparing for our match I had to focus on what I was going to do and how I was going to perform. If I were to try to develop mental toughness in someone I was coaching I would ask them to set several goals and show them ways to achieve each of these. During practice I would make sure that any drills that I had them do would simulate the experience they would have during a competition.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Mental toughness is the ability to control the non physical aspect of sports. mental toughness has nothing to do about being athletic or being the best on the court. say someone is tired but its the end of the game. about a minute left in the game and you are up 2 points. are you going to have enough mental toughness to get one stop or are you going to be tired and let them tie or win the game? That is one thing i feel like i have over many people. Mental toughness. It goes a long way. a person could be a great player but heres another player who is just as good and you can tell he has mental toughness. I rather have the second person because he is just as good as the first player but has mental focus. It helps you perform alot better and smarter also.

  22. Once I was playing in a championship game in AAU, the gm was packed the girls were plentiful and there were all these scouts around. We are down by one with fifteen seconds to play coach calls a timeout to draw up a play where one of our players drives to the hole for the score, now the plan was for him either to go to the hole with no trouble and make the layup or kick it out for the jumper the three. He does this gets fouled but the ref doesn't want to call it, now right there he could have stopped and complained to the ref and the game would have been over right there. But instead of doing that he tapped the rebound out to another one of our players who ended up hitting the three to win the game, now that to me shows real mental toughness he didn't worry about the call like other players sometimes do he continued to play in order to give our tem the best chance to win. That right there just shows toughness that some people don't have.

  23. 1.Mental Toughness means to have the ability to overcome any distractions that could mess up your performance during competition or practices.
2.Playing basketball involves a lot of physical and mental concentration every second during competition or practice. This is something that you cannot practice but you must learn to adjust when situations are getting tough.
3.Mental toughness is developed once you have the ability to tell the difference between good and bad. You learn at a young age once you are active in sports that not everything is going to be handed to you but you must work hard and take all criticism that comes with it to be better. Being able to handle any distractions when you start playing a sport and making adjust as you get older will help you be the best player you can be.
4.Mental toughness and sportsmanship blend in with one another because knowing that you did all you can do despite the yelling and high expectations that was thrown at you and still come up short and being comfortable with that, you have developed a great skill that not a lot of athetes can grasp within a couple of years adjusting. Breaking down and showing no respect to your opponent puts you at a spot that lowers your demeanor as a person and an athlete.

  24. Mental Toughness is an athlete controlling their emotions during the game whether it's positive or negative, being focused in everything you do, not being distracted with anything else that is happening during the moment, achieving goals, and using the past games, events to help play better in the future. 2.) One of my team mates during a golf tournament had to play in really tough conditions such as the heat. We were in Arizona and had to play 36 holes for the first day. The temperature was at least 95 degrees outside and all the players had to ride carts in order to prevent heat stroke. My team mate was able to post great scores especially during the heat. In golf, it is very difficult to score well including in rough conditions as the temperature. So my team mate was able to obtain mental toughness and play really well. 3.) Again golf is mostly a individual sport, and what a golfer has to deal with is mental toughness. Golf is a sport that many agree has the most mental toughness being used such as 90% mental and 10% physical. Every tournament or even a practice round, a golfer has to use their mental side to play well, such as not getting down on yourself, being in control of your emotions, and everything else around you...weather. 4.) I believe mental toughness is related to ethics because, in any sport it takes mental toughness to achieve great accomplishments such as football. In football, you have to try your best since it's the team, if the team doesn't have mental toughness they won't be able to have the positive attitude and energy to play their best and win. Golf is the same thing, being in a team deals with mental toughness where a player needs to play well in 18 holes in order to help contribute to the team and help the team win tournaments. Every second is critical, important and shouldn't be wasted in order to get better in whatever sport any athlete is playing. People already learn so much by watching professional athletes achieve greatness. Tiger woods is a perfect example of mental toughness, because there isn't anyone else who is tougher than him. If you watch him play even when he struggles, he still scores well. In his daily lives he manages time with family, business, fans, foundations, charity, and his game for the most part.

  25. To me mental toughness is the ability for a person over come a situation in rational way. It’s the ability to work through pain and weakness to make you that much better. Some people are born with this and some people aren’t. When adversity and hardship strike some people fall and other succeed. It is the ability to work better and hard when the pressure is on and it late in the game.
Many times through my “career” of playing have I seen people give up and seen people push on. During team workouts in the off-season when the work outs are harder and more difficult then ever before, some people simply can’t push on when they start getting fatigue and weak. During this time is when mental toughness comes in and gives you that boost to finish the workout and not be the guy who starts making excuses as to why he can’t finish. But there were also those guys who did much on making me push that much harder not to get bet or quit.
Mental toughness is not something that is built in a day. It takes time to develop mental toughness by just learning from experience, pushing on when you think you can’t give anymore and by have the will to succeed. It is thought by others encouraging and pushing others around them when they re having a hard time and struggling to finish or push on. Everyone can achieve its something you work on.
Mental toughness can be related to ethics by way of being a man of your word and showing people that our committed. Most say they are going to do something and don’t follow through. I think that by being mental tough you are able to say what your going to do and do it, over coming any obstacles that you might encounter

    ReplyDelete
  26. Mental Toughness is a drive within a person that forces them to keep going no matter the obstacles. It is the perseverance through all challenges that athletes and people face. Mental toughness is learned and it continues to grow through all the hard times.
I had a personal experience with mental toughness came when I was a junior in high school. I was just finishing up my ice hockey season and had just earned the spot of starting varsity catcher. During my last hockey tournament I was hit and my ACL was torn. Even though I couldn't play softball that season I still never missed a practice or a game. It was very difficult to watch the team play without but once the next season came around I was able to play once again. The time away from the game had actually made me stronger and my mental toughness had increased I know that I could over come anything.
It takes a long time to develop mental toughness. It is something that has to be worked on and understood. Mental toughness is a very personal thing that only the athlete or person can make happen within themselves.
Mental toughness is very much related to ethics. If an athlete is mentally tough they are less likely to start a fight or cheat. They have to personal drive within them that makes them want to persevere. Athletes that are mentally tough normally don't overreact to a situation they are stronger.

How mental toughness is related to ethics---that is link some of the prime moral values to your response from #3---this post and the post on sport and entertainment should be completed by midnight on Thursday may 1---blog # 8 will post that day---blog # 9 will post next weekend
Mental toughness is when every athlete has opportunity to play their best in any situation, even when they encounter problems, hassles, adversity or failure. The situations demanding mental toughness could be actually when someone is playing on the road in front of a hostile crowd, fighting illness or injuries, suffering through a slump or losing streak, confronting adverse playing conditions, against difficult opponents, during really important competitions or when the situation is critical or the game is on the line.
For me especially, I have a very complicate year. During pre-season games I injury myself in Portland game. Throughout the process to recover myself I missed 10 games over the season. So the most difficult moment through all the recover process was to be able to be mentally toughness prepared for the challenge.
Mental toughness is related to ethics because includes competitions where some athlete from time to time respects their opponent as they respect their self. However building a very higher level of competition and also this can easily become unethical depends of the values of the competitor.

  28. Mental toughness the name itself already says at all, mental toughness is the ability to control the non physical aspect of sport. It is not because you are athlete or something you are the best on the court, mental toughness has nothing to do with that. An example of mental toughness is let’s say you’re playing basketball and your body get very tired, and you think you cannot go anymore and your team is losing by 2 points, that’s when you have to be tough in your mind, because you can let them win the game or you going to though enough to step and make the last shoot? Mental toughness is nothing more than your thoughts and a little bit of hard work. That is something I believe I feel like I have over many people” Mental toughness”.

  29. 1) Mental Toughness: In my own words, mental toughness means possessing the ability to push oneself through moments of adversity while remaining calm and collective.
    2) In college in MT, I was fouled on a three pointer with 1.6 seconds left in overime. My team was down only 1, yet I was only 4-7 from the line during the course of the game. I missed the first free throw and my coach called a time out. He huddled the team up, yet told me to collect my thoughts away from the huddle. I envisioned making both free throws in my mind and ended up making both.
    3) The development of mental toughness in a team setting could progress through the use of situational sequences. For example, if a basketball team were to practice in a situation with only 10 seconds on the clock daily, when the time came for that particular situation, the members of the tam would be mentally/cognitively ready, almost like it would be second nature.
    4) As for the relation between mental toughness and ethics, this is a common occurrence in college and pro sports. Many times, there are players who are physically gifted and have a limited mental toughness capacity. A player will score because of his/her ability, then showboat, and lose track of their responsibility, hurting their team. Mental toughness relate to how a player leads his or her team. Most leaders on a team remain calm and collective, and usually posses the ability to portray good character/ethics.

  30. Mental toughness to me is being able to overcome any physical shortcomings, lack of ability, or lack of ablilty on a certain day of struggle. One example of mental toughness that comes to mind is Tiger Woods last year at the U.S. Open. the way he used mental toughness to overcome the pain in his knee every swing and the charging Rocco Mediate.
Developing mental toughness is a hard feat, it is something that I think you are more born with than can be taught. In order to become more mentally tough you have to be able to put bad moments behind you and retain all your focus to the task at hand.
When I relate mental toughness to ethics I think that players that are more mentally tough than others also play their sport more ethically. The reasoning behind my thought is that players who are mentally tough are not afraid to over come the adversity they may face in an ethical game where the less mentally tough player would act out of fear and haste, without using their brain, and make an unethical move in order to gain an edge that way in the competition.

  31. mental toughness in sports is when you have the control to overcome your surroundings during a game. in a game there is always things that you need to blockout, like the crowd, and your opponetts.
when i was in high school during a basketball game the crowd would say the worst things too me and my team, and then they started to throw trash on the court. instead of losing our cool we kept our composure and went ito the locker room down by 20 points and coach gave us a speech and said we have to be mentally tough, and we came out in the 2nd half and eventually won the game in overtime.

  32. Mental toughness is being able to stay focus on the task at hand without losing sight of your goal due to distractions. being mentally tough could be the difference between being an average player or an elite. for example, in high school during our district/conference tourney we play championship game on our opponent's home court. it was loud and nerve wrecking because their fans were crazy but, we stuck to the game played and blocked them out and we won the game.

  33. mental toughness is the ability to focus on the task at hand, and be able to weed out all outside distraction to understand what you have to do to reach the goal you want to achieve. to achieve mental toughness i feel you must go through, or do something that you have not done before. example of this would be every summer we have to run 24, 110 yard sprints, and for many of the football players they drop early and cannot make their times. but as the summer progresses every week they challenge themselves to do one more then the week prior. this to me is an example of mental toughness.
to build mental toughness i feel you need to be able to ballance your emotions that you have when things become hard. emotions like quitting, or feeling sorry for yourself. you need to refocus to and tell yourself you can push through the obsticle you are in.

  34. Mental toughness to me is the ability to have confidence in your abilities and how to perform at your best and keep performing at your best even when the outside influences may be making do otherwise.

My most recent example of mental toughness was the beginning of this golf season when I went out in the morning in the freezing wind and sleet. The weather conditions were unbearable however, I really wanted to play and I knew if this didn’t toughen me up nothing would. It was hard to ignore the weather and focus on the shot at hand when my fingers had little feeling. It was a good experience though, as it really made me think about my mental routine before a shot.

I think a good way to build mental toughness is to put yourself in harsh conditions and see how you perform. I do not think everybody should be thrown into the fire to build mental toughness, but I think it is beneficial for me. To help my golf game, going out really early when I may not be fully alert would prompt me to respond in some way, hopefully in an adaptive way. Other ways would be to simulate a harsh playing condition as best you could. Teams often practice with simulated crowd noise to get acclimated to loud venue. These are all beneficial ways, but I think individual differences will play a role in how effective it will be.

Mental toughness should include some prime moral values. If you are a mentally tough performer, then you would be less likely to play dirty or let things affect you that make act out against your opponent or official for example. A mentally tough person would be not as affected by things that may make someone do something that does not represent good gamesmanship. One would be less likely to “crack” under pressure and lash out.

  35. Mental toughness is a positive and strong mind set where a person is determined to do well and confident in their ability to do so.

At conference indoor track championships I had a rough first day by not making the final in the 800m like I should have. I was pretty upset about it and I guess more just angry but life had to go on and I had yet to run the 3000m. Despite the fact that I had never run the 3000m indoors ever before and had trained more specificaly for shorter distances all season, I had the confidence that I would do really well. I had the pressure of the team to earn points so soon as the gun went off I got out there in the front right away. No one would take the lead and I was determined to not have the race come down to the last lap. I didn’t let the fact that our best runner alwys just drafts off me and kicks by me at the end piss me off, I just ran how I felt and let te race unfold. My confidence and determination led me to a great race and I scored well for our team. I also took my first negative race at conference and turned it into a second much more positive one.

To develop mental toughness is hard because it deffintely takes experiences on the athletes end as well as their drive to do well. One thing that would help develop mental toughness from the sidelines would by be by being encouraging and positive while letting the athlete know they have confidence in them.

Mental toughness is related to ethics because it’s about being positive, having goals, and being determined to achieve them. Being mentally tough means being strong with a positive attitude to get things done and done well no matter the circumstances. Mental toughness is the easiest way to deal with other athletes with bad ethics as well. Mental toughness allows and athlete to be uneasily frustrated and brought down by others bad moral decisions or just bad calls.

  36. Mental toughness is having the natural or developed psychological edge that enables you to Generally cope better than your opponents with the many demands , competition, training, lifestyles, that are placed on you as a performer Specifically, to be more consistent and better than your opponents in remaining determined, focused, confident, resilient, and in control under pressure.
i feel that when you have mental toughness that you will withstand any kind of pressure or any kind of competion that is in front of you. sometimes when we are lifting some weights i feel like i can do things that certain things that i wouldnt be able to do if i didnt have a mental toughness to my game. i feel that our team has a better mental toughess than last year.

  37. In my own words mental toughness is something player has to develope. it is something that is in them that wont let them give up or to quit when things gert hard. i think this is something that all athletes have to have if they want to succeed. My good example of mental toughness is in 2007 when my team and i were playing for the 5A state championship when my quarterback and best friend albert suffered from a third degree ankle sprain the week before in the semis. He ignored the pain and still played the the championship. this in my opinion is great mental toughness because that is a bad injury. just to want to walk let alone run is tough enough. Albert played a good game even though we did not win but he showed a lot of toughness going through that whole game without saying a word about it. i think as a coach to develope mental toughness in a team the team has to be willing to go somewhere that they have never gone before. somwhere where it gets hard and no matter what they have to persivere. mental toughness is related to ethics by playing by the rules and if someone does take a cheap shot on you,you have to be mentally tough enough to let it go because the old saying is the first guy never gets caught the second guy does.

  38. 1)I think that mental toughness can either be a natural or developed talent. It is the ability to control your emotions in difficult situations. When there is a bad call, poor sport, a crowded gym, the athlete needs to be able to push aside the emotions that they may be feeling and keep focused on the game. You need to be able to out perform your opponents and it all starts with mental toughness. Mental toughness includes confidence in yourself and in your game.
2)At my junior college, one game I had 17 points, 14 steals and 9 rebounds. The game was tied and I was at the free throw line with just a few seconds remaining. At this moment, I had to put aside my nerves and excitement. I needed to focus on putting the ball through the hoop. I made both of my free throws and we were ahead by 2. This was a very high stakes moment in the game, but because I had developed mental toughness, I was able to be successful.
    3) You can develop mental toughness by being put in situations where you are forced to be in a state of mind that enables you to concentrate on the task at hand.
4)Mental Toughness relates to ethics because you have to be able to act respectfully with the bad calls, the trash talking opponents, and the losses. On the other hand, you show mental toughness when you win a game and rather than being over the top, you celebrate your win graciously with your friends

  39. To me, mental toughness is the desire to achieve some sort of success by putting your body and mind through an excruciating challenge.
    2. When I think of a specific example I think of a wrestleing match that I watched of one of my good friends from high school. His name was kyle and he was wrestleing a tough farm kid from Weiser Idaho. Kyle was down the whoe match and had to fix a bloody eye and nose several times. He showed extreme toughness both mentally and physically. He came back from beng way behind and pinned the kid in the final seconds. He later became a 2007 Oregon State Champion wrestler at a weight of 215.
    3. Mental toughness can be developed with competition. The strive for success reflects on how tough a person is mentally and how hard that person works for that success.
    4. Mental toughness is related to ethics in the family life and a hard working provider of a family. It is the obligation for there to be a bread winner in a family and sometimes it takes a lot of mental toughness to achieve success in that aspect as well.

  40. Mental toughness is having the natural or developing psychological edge that enables you to it also cope to do better than your opponents with competition, training or lifestyle. An example of this would be the summer for the Vandal Football team we have to run 110 yard sprints 24 times, and for many of the football players they drop early and cannot make their times, but as the summer goes on every week we challenge each other to do one more or keep going. This to me is an example of mental toughness. To build mental toughness is to be more consistent and be better than your opponents, being focused at all times when competing, have confident in yourself and being in control when being under pressure.

  41. 1. I believe mental toughness is the ability to have complete focus on the task at hand even in the presence of distractions and detractors.

    2. A time I had to be mentally tough was my senior year in the state championship basketball game. My team was up by one point when I came out of a scrap for a loose ball and got fouled with 5 seconds left. If I hit both free throws, I would push our lead to 3 and the team would have to hit a long range bomb at the end just to send it into overtime. As I got to the line, the opposing teams fans were hollering their heads off, even calling me names trying to get me to miss. To make things even more difficult, my best friend who played on the opposing team started talking to me at the line, smiling slyly and saying "You know you gotta hit these free-throws Daniel, you never miss these..." I kind of laughed and said, "yeah, i don't..." and calmy hit both. I was able to block out the distractions and detractors to ice the game.

    3. You develop mental toughness within a team or an individual by practice. Practicing visual imagery techniques is one way to do this. By becoming familiar with your environment and visualizing what you will do, you can gain confidence from the experience. This builds mental toughness.

    4. Mental toughness is related to ethics because in some cases of sports it is tough to be "ethically-correct" in some situations when you need to be. For example, if a scoring record is 12 points away and in reach of a basketball player, but his team is up 45 points entering the fourth quarter against an obvious mismatched opponent, that player would need to exercise extreme mental toughness to say to himself "it isn't worth their humiliation" and be able to sit the rest of the game.

  42. mental toughness to me is being able to push yourselt to the next level. you develop mental toughness by going through hard situations in your life. i have had many hard thing in my life such as having a family member die, and also my sister having cancer. when i play sports its is easy for me not to fold under pressure becasue these life situations have made me a stronger person, and not alot of things bother me

  43. 1.Mental toughness is being able to push yourself when your body wants to quit. its also being able to stay focused in adverse situations.
2.I experienced mental toughness in high school when i sprained my ankle. I had to keep playing even though i was hurting very bad. I had to get re-taped three times during the game in order to keep going.
    3. you can teach a team to mental tough by giving them work-outs and practice in adverse situations, for example we had to practice and work out in the snow it was 10 degrees and windy. but now if we face that during the season we know what to expect.

  44. 1.mental toughness is being able to over come obsticals mentally when your body is to tired to keep going.
2.when i was playing basketball we had to make 20 shots in a row as a team and for a everytime we did we had to run a ladder after about ten ladders i was tired and getin very frustrated with people missing shots so i had to get mentally tuff and just over come all the negastive thoughts in my head and just get it done

  46. 1.) mental toughness is when you can go on mentally and not give up becuase you are getting physically tired.
2.)I play with a football player right now that went three quarters of spring ball with a sprained knee and a sprained ankle only because he fighting through the pain mentally.
3.)You can just run the team to where the are so tired and when they do get tired you encourage them and get into their minds to let them know that they are doing good and they can keep going.
