Bagger Vance and the Application of Ethical Toughness

Last Tuesday in class you saw two short clips from the movie--Bagger Vance. If you are fortunate, you have seen the whole movie! Nonetheless, for our purposes here, the discussion on this blog will center around the ethical dilemma faced by Capt. Junah and the application of mental toughness that he chose to employ. In both clips, Junah was discouraged, and on the verge of quitting. His caddie; Bagger Vance, was responsible for providing him with the inspiration necessary to continue on. Reference our discussion and the slides that you have regarding mental toughness--particularly the 'six rooms in the house of mental toughness' and describe how Bagger was able to help Junah. Further, link the discussion to ethics--what prime moral values did Bagger appeal to when he helped Junah. How was this shown in the clips? Check out your email--important news regarding how we intend to finsih the semester!

  1. In Bagger Vance, Bagger was able to help Junah get his golf-ball out of the woods and the young boy to putt by using some key mental toughness exercises. When he helped Junah get out of the woods, he told Junah to think of a place of peace where he could accomplish anything. He also had Junah focus on where he needed to hit the ball rather than the obstacles that could potentially block its path. These two methods of coaching mental toughness are each a room in the “house of mental toughness,” designed to help the player keep his mind from getting in the way of his performance. By using another place for Junah to go where he could easily ignore his frustration was an example of the tolerance for frustration room. The other room Baggar used in the woods was the concentration and focus room where an athlete has to conquer the anxiety, uncertainty and stress they feel.

When Baggar is teaching the young boy how to putt, he uses more rooms in order for the boy to make the shot. First he starts with persistence as he has the boy try again and again to make the putt until he finally takes the ball away and makes the boy swing his club at nothing. Baggar does this in order for the boy to feel his swing since Baggar explains that no two swings are alike. I think by saying no two swings are alike, Baggar makes the boy more self-efficacy and makes his swing unique, then by placing the ball on the ground at just the right time and having the boy make the shot successfully, it give the boy self-confidence, which is one of the most important rooms in the house of mental toughness.

  2. From the first movie clip taken from Bagger Vance. Junah is given the opportunity to cheat. Bagger then interferes with Junah's thoughts and coaches him by pulling out the mental toughness aspect of the game. Two subjects from the house of mental subjects used in this video clip are 1) concentration and focus as Bagger tells Junah to focus on the goal where stress and other things can ruin the concentration and 2) self-confidence by thinking of a place where he is calm and can do anything. This is a realistic perspective about achieving success.

In the second video clip from the same movie Vance Bagger, a little boy is trying to learn how to putt a ball. The boy is getting frustrated showing his lack of mental toughness. In this case Bagger uses these two forms of mental toughness. First persistence by telling the boy to keep trying and keep swinging. He tells the boy to close his eyes and to just keep swinging to get in the feel of it. The boy then is told that he has to find his own swing and once he does the ball will go in. This is the form of Self-efficacy where he is then brought up to self-esteem when the ball is finally hit into the hole.

  3. In the first clip, Junah is on the verge of cheating because he is overwhelmed. He is uncertain of his abilities and also has the physical obstacles in front of him. Bagger Vance comes and refocuses Junah in his game. He also helps Junah realize the controlables in the game, which is the way he plays, not the things around him. This helps Junah with his tolerance and frustration. Bagger tells Junah to go to a place where he's at peace. This strategy helps Junah see past the obstacles and have faith in himself again. By cheating, Junah would have broken down in his mental toughness.

In the second clip, Bagger helps the boy to realize his self-efficiacy using the same technique. He helps the boy go to a place in his mind where the obstacle wasn't there. When the boy was comfotable enough within his own mind, Bagger shows the boy he CAN do it as long as he doesn't try too hard by putting a ball in front of him during the boy's swing.

  4. In the first clip Junah is about to cheat. He does not really know waht he is capbable of. Bagger Vance comes and helps Junah realize somethings while playing the game. Helps Junah get over many obstacles and believe in himself.
In the second clip Bagger helps him realize pretty much the same thing. The boy got comfortable at his swing and he had enough confidence to do it on his own.

  6. in the first clip of the movie Bagger Vance Junah had the opportunity to cheat, just before he does so Bagger questions his mental toughness in how he plays the sport. instead of showing an easy way out of the situation (like cheating) bagger showed him the correct steps in order to hit the ball the right way to get by the obsticle. Bagger questioned Junahs mental toughness by seeing if he could handle another way then cheating, and that was taking the harder way. this made him mentally stronger because although there was an easier way to approach the task at hand, doing it the right way, the longer way was the best action to take.

in the second clip of the movie Bagger Vance is trying to show the young boy how to put, like most young golfers he was easily frustrated with his putting performance. but Bagger continued to encourage the boy and built up his self confidence until he was comfortible enough to put. he also built up his mental toughness by making him clothes his eyes and put.. he did this to make him invisioin his shot in his head.

  7. In the first video, Vance Bagger coached Junah with some key mental toughness advice. Junah had flashbacks of horrible memories that interfered him during the game. Bagger showed up then advise Junah to forget the memories and focus on playing golf. By focusing, this helped Junah hit the ball to where he needed to rather than realizing the obstacles that is blocking his way. Bagger also advice him to find a peaceful place where he can concentrate.

In the second video, the boy was missing shots by putting the ball but Bagger also helped the boy with mental toughness. He suggested the boy to close his eyes and imagine how he is going to swing. By doing this, it helps the boy's concentration and muscle memory.

  8. Bagger was able to Junuh by appealing to his mental game which is important in golf. He helped him concentrate at the shot he needed to hit while helping to eliminate distractions and keeping him determined to make a good out out of a bad lie. Bagger appealed to his responsibility morals, which includes being a responsible golfer to hit the ball where it lies. Also, by helping Junuh tolerate some frustrations, he helped Junuh eliminate the possibility of shirking on his moral values.

  9. In the first clip, Junah is thinking about quiting the game because it's getting very tough. Bagger has Junah just calm down and settle himself. Junah focuses on shooting the gap between the trees and nothing else, and puts the ball right next to the hole. In the second clip Bagger has the boy be persistent in his swinging. When the club is at the right spot, Bagger drops the ball and the kid sinks the put. This helps his self confidence, which is one of the "rooms".

  10. mental toughness is something that you have to be strong about and you need someone there to influence it sometimes to help you out with it. and when bagger calmed junah down before he was thinking of quiting and got him to focus on the shot. he shot the ball right ion the green.
when junah was missing all of his puts in the second clip. bagger vance told him that he should close his eyes and think of how is going to take the shot. and when he did that his concentration went to the sky and he used muscle memory on that.

  11. Through inspiration Bagger was able to help Junah. First of all, Junah wasn’t in a very tough mind state and that needed to change. Bagger is super positive towards Junah leading to drive a new erupting mental toughness. Bagger used his own confidence to spark Junah’s confidence in himself which caused him to not be afraid to fail. He took a second to reflect and realize his great ability and never second guessed it. Bagger reminded him of past successes to make Junah believe he could do it! One huge tatic he used that is proved to be very benifical to athletes is visualization. Being able to see yourself do something before hand only ups your confidence. Bagger used simple morals of being positive and encouraging to help a person be their best. He used past experiences and truth to spark inspiration in the athlete.

  12. In the two movie clips it showed two different characters in the movie not believing in themselves. In the first clips Junah was going to cheat and therefore cheat the game and himself. Bagger catches him just in time and helps him to realize that he has the ability to make the shot with out cheating. With the help of Bagger Junah is able to make the shot and still maintain his integrity.
In the second movie clip the young boy is trying to help Bagger figure out the slope of the green. While doing this the young boy gets frustrated that is can't make the put. Bagger talks with the boy and gives him confidence in himself that he can do this. The boy closes his eyes and feels the swing. He hits the ball and makes the put. Bagger helped him find confidence and the young boy developed self-efficacy from being able to make the put.

  13. in the first clips, Junah starts to feel the pressure of the competition and has thoughts of giving up but, Bagger talks to him and calms him down. Junah focal point was shooting the gaps between the tree and he put the ball close to the hole.

in the second clip, Junah was missing his shots. Bagger helped him with his mental toughness. he had him close his eyes and imagine himself swinging. this helped with his concentration.

  14. In the first clip, Junah is in the edge to cheating because he is snowed under his limited, and then he is doubt of his skills to play overcome of the physical obstacles in front of him. Bagger Vance comes and refocuses Junah in his game, his argument in how he approaching the target creating his mental toughness issues. He also helps Junah realize the controllable in the game; this was a cue for Junah to understand and tolerance the frustration of the next step along Bagger tells Junah to go to a place where he's at peace, completing the stage of Mental toughness. In the second clip, Bagger helps the boy to comprehend his self-efficacy using the same method of the first movie clip. The boy started getting frustrated showing his lack of mental toughness.

  15. The two clips that were shown in class showed us different forms of mental toughness. The first clip showed us about ethics and teaching us not to cheat. The second clip was about persistance. It was designed to help people realize that they have to continue to try in order to accomplish something.
The first clip was the clip that really dealt with ethics. It was the clip when they were in the woods and bagger helped make sure that he didn't cheat by moving the ball. These temptations happen everyday. Having these things happen in sport can only make people more mentally tough in everyday life.

  16. in the first clip junah is about to cheat when bagger steps in and gives him an alternate route to cheating even though this way is a little harder. Junah's mental tougness is questioned by bagger when he is about to attempt to cheat.
the second clip was more of a not giving up because that is an easy way out and it shows weakness. It also shows us that junah had no mental toughness at all. anybody who is mentally tough at all can tell you that they never quit or give up.

  17. The five rooms in the house of mental toughness are concentration/focus, tolerance for frustration, determination/intentness, persistence and self-efficacy/self-confidence. Bagger was able to help Judah by assisting Judah to use these traits. He helped him focus, take his mind of his past issues that bother him so greatly, gave him a goal to replace them with. He believed in him and helped him face reality. Bagger’s acts built up Judah’s self-confidence and in return his self-efficacy as well. This is closely linked to moral values because Bagger demonstrates honesty, justice, beneficence and responsibility to Judah. This is why Judah is so attentive to Bagger and takes to hear what he has to say. Bagger is sincere and only looking out for Judah’s best interest and Judah trusts him.

  18. In the first clip Junah was about to cheat but Bagger Vance helped him to focus and over come the obsticle. Bagger Vance told Junah to go to a peaceful place in his mind so junah could blockout all the other destracting things and just focus on where he wanted the ball to land.
The second clip was more about having self confidence and not letting your self down which is also one of the room in mental toughness.

  19. Bagger was able to help Junah get his golf-ball out of the of the three by using some mental toughness technique and Junah was able to get out of three with an outstanding performance. Bagger tried to help Junah by using some relaxation technique known as imagery relaxation which help you to think that you are in a peace environment to relax yourself and focus in your target. This technique helped Junah to focus in hit the ball without any kid of distracter. These two methods of coaching mental toughness are each a room in the “house of mental toughness,” designed to help athletes to get their peak of performance using not just their body skills, but also their mind as a vehicle to research their goals. The techniques used by Baggar were relaxation and focus to overcome the anxiety factors which most of the time has a bad influence over athlete’s performance during the competition.
From my view point baggar focused just in two swing to make the boy more confidence and let the concentration flow over his body. It helped the boy gain the confidence and made his swing move more perfect. Finally the boy got out of the three with an amazing shoot getting closer to hole. The boy got a self-confidence which one of the most important rooms in the house of mental toughness to reach your goal as an athlete in any circumstance

  20. Well fortunately i have seen this whole movie. It is really good. In the first clip junah hit his ball in the woods and had a really difficult shot out. Things were starting to go wrong and was on the verge cheating because wasnt sure if he was capable of pulling off the shot to stay on track to win the match. Baggar came and gave him a "pep" talked and gave him the courage he needed to refocus on what he is really good at, playing the game of golf. He re focused and hit the ball perfectly out of the mess, which set him up for the rest of the film to start playing good again.

I thought that the second clip displays something that is very hard for any athlete to accomplish. Only the best of the best in the world are able to completely block out every single distractions, especially for a good period of time.

A clip that i thought that i was surprised that wasnt shown that shows a very good ethic move and that shows great sportsmanship and gamesmanship was when in the play off hole junah as the best shot out of all three of them and is pretty much as an easy shot to win. But he was touching around his ball and it moved. which means it he has to take a stroke. No one, even the other players didnt want him to take the stroke but he did.

  21. Basically what bagger vance did was give Junah his swagger back, or his confidence what happend was he lost it. After he went to the war he was all messed up in the head and he didn't have fun playing golf anymore. Really what he did was let him know that you have to let go of all your guilt all the things he did wrong, what he had to do was put them in the past or else the ghosts of his pasts would haunt him to where he couldn't function again. He also let him know the whole town was counting on him and he couldn't quit, really showing him that there was no other way than to calm down and meet the task at hand head on. Really the only thing Bgger did was pave the pathway to free Junah's mind in order to function properly at golf.

  22. In the first clip, Bagger was able to he aid Junah in getting his ball out of some thick woods. In the second clip, the young boy was helped by bagger on the putting green. Both of these feats were accomplished using mental toughness techniques. Junah was told to imagine a place where anything he could think of was possible. This raised his self confidence and then Bagger had him focus on where to hit the ball, instead of the obstacles in his way. Jonah used the "concentration and focus room". This is where athlete rids him or herself of anxiety and stress o order to accomplish a goal.

In the instance of the young boy, Bagger tells him to concentrate on the mechanics of his swing and nothing else. The young boy closes his eyes and basically becomes entranced while Bagger continues talking. You can sense that the boy has let go of the stress/worry of making the putt and has truly put himself in the moment. When the time is right, and when Bagger feels the young boy had become confident enough in his swing, he puts the ball in front of the swinging club and it finds the cup. This gives the boy self-confidence, which is very important in mental toughness.

  23. In the first Baggar Vance clip when Junah is deep in the woods with a tough shot ahead of him, Baggar uses some good mental toughness techniques that allow Junah to get his ball out of the woods clean. Baggar tells Junah to focus on where he needs to hit the ball instead of focusing on the obstacles that lie in his way. He also told him to imagine a place where he could do anything he put his mind to. Junah stepped up to his ball, eyed the hole in the trees where he needed to shoot his ball and let it rip. He used the concentration and focus room technique that allows the person to do what they need without any added stress.
In the clip where the young boy is on the putting green trying to make a putt, Baggar uses the persistence method of mental toughness and tells him to just keep swinging. He tells him to keep swinging and imagine the ball going in the hole. Baggar has the boy close his eyes while he is swinging his club and when baggar feels the boy has enough confidence in his swing, he places a ball in front of the boy and when the boy swings he hits the ball and sinks the putt. The method of mental toughness Baggar used in this clip was self confidence.

  24. In the first video clip Junah is frustrated with the way his game is going, almost to the point where he is temped to quit. The opportunity is present that he could cheat and give himself a better lie. Bagger Vance approaches him in a why that is very powerful and motivational. He simply tells him that he has the ability to make the shoot through the trees and not to give up on what he has. That’s mental toughness for him to push through even though the odds are against him. With positive self talk and believing in himself, he was able to make the shoot not only did he clear the woods but he also hit the green. It would have been unethical had he moved the ball, yet through mental toughness he was able make the right decision not to cheat.
The second clip was also a lesson in mental toughness, have the ability to be confident in yourself as well the natural skills that you have. Bagger tells to the boy too “be the club, feel the club, don’t force the ball in let it go in,” Showing him that he is able to make the putt, and having the confidence that you can do it every-time.

  25. In the first clip, Capt. Junah has a seemingly impossible shot to hit through the trees, deep in the woods. With this ominous task before him, Junah starts getting frustrated and discouraged. One of the rooms in the "house of mental toughness" is the tolerance for frustration room. Bagger Vance, his caddie, helped Capt. Junah to tolerate his frustration by using mental toughness techniques. He told Junah to focus on not what obstacles he might hit, but instead on the path and point through the woods that would get his ball on the green. Also, the concentration and focus room was brought into play by Bagger telling Junah to think of somewhere happty to go, to envision himself being in his happy place.

In the second clip, Bagger is helping the young boy to putt on the green. The boy starts becoming frustrated because none of his putts are going in, and to himself may be thinking that he is "failing" in the eyes of the legendary Bagger Vance. Instead of diminishing the boy's confidence, Bagger uses mental toughness techniques like persistence to help the young kid. He persistently talks to him softly, telling him to find his swing since no two swings are alike. He uses self-efficacy to reinforce in the boys mind that once he finds his swing everything will flow smoothly and the ball will go in. Once Bagger put the ball down at the right time once he knew the boy found his swing, putter connected with ball and it rolled right into the cup.

  26. In the first clip Junah is faced with what seems to be an impossible shot through a small ray of light he can see from his ball in the deep woods. Junah becomes frustrated looking at the shot and begins to doubt he can make it. Baggar Vance helped Junah deal with this frustration by tolerance, one of the rooms in the house of mental toughness. Baggar told Junah about another room in the house of mental toughness, concentration and focus. To go to a happy place to concentrate and focus on the shot, he told him to think about hitting the ball through the hole in the trees, not hitting the obstacles in the way.
In the second clip Baggar is helping a boy putt on the green. The boys putts are not going in and he is getting frustrated with himself, he thinks he is failing in the eyes of Baggar. Baggar helps the boy by telling him to be persistent, he encourages the boy and tells him that when he finds his swing the ball will go in. Then when Baggar put the ball down, it went in the cup.

  27. In the first clip Junah was frustrated and was faced with a very impossible shot. Junah was going to cheat because he didn't believe in himself of making the shot through the woods. With Baggar's help he gave Junah the confident to not cheat and make the shot possible. Junah gain confident in himself by making that hard shot thanks to Baggar.
In the second clip a young boy was getting frustrated with himself because his putts are not going in. Baggar help this little boy to be persistent. Telling this young boy to close his eyes and find his swing motion and when Baggar drop the ball the young boy hit and it went in.

  28. In the Bagger Vance Clips Matt Damon had the motivation to make the shot, but took the support of Will Smith to get the job done. I believe that so much more is possible with positive mental attitude and confidence. Not necessarily cocky, but knowing that you have the ability to achieve something. The fist clip demonstrates that perfectly.
The second clip demonstrates how to visualize success. This is something that every coach tells you to do and it defiantly is a helpful tool to greatness. Visualize a great play and victory.

  29. in the first movie clip that we saw he wanted to cheat but he knew that it was wrong and that he should not be doing that.
in the second movie clip he was getting very frusterated and he kind of wanted to give up, but the caddy helped him out with his self asteem, and it helped him re-group.

  30. In the first clip capt junah was about ready to cheat because his mind was on pretty much every thing that didn't pertain to getting that ball through those trees and onto the green. He pretty much took a trip through all five rooms in the mental toughness house and did the exact opposite. When Bagger showed he talked junah through what he was going through first by acknowledging where his mind was currently and walked him back through the concentration room, the tolerance for frustration room, the intentness room and then followed it up with the self confidence room to top it off. He got him to forget for that second all the bad things that were in his past and got him to focus on the one thing that he could control..his golf swing.

In the second clip where the kid was getting frusterated with putting, Bagger takes him through a little visualization session that turned into an imagery session with the boy closing his eyes and feeling the putter swing like a pendulum in his hands and felt the ball hit off the putter face and heard the ball fall into the whole. Bagger took him through the concentration room which led to the tolerance for frustration room which opened the door for the intentness on what mattered room and ended up in the self confidence room

  31. In the movie, Bagger helped Junah with getting his golf ball out of the woods and motivating him to putt. He used some mental toughness exercises to do this. Bagger told Junah to think of a place or peace where he could accomplish anything. Bagger also told Junah to switch his focus from the obstacles that could block his path to where he needed to hit the ball. The methods of coaching mental toughness are both in the “house of mental toughness.” This is designed to assist the player to stay focused on his performance. An example of the tolerance for frustration room was asking Junah to go where he could easily ignore his frustrations. Bagger also used the concentration and focus room in the woods. This is where an athlete must defeat his anxieties, stress, and uncertainties.

Bagger uses other rooms as well when teaching the boy how to putt. Persistence is stressed when the boy must try and try again until he takes the ball away and makes him swing at nothing. The boy is then told that he has to find his own swing and once he does the ball will go in. This is the form of self-efficacy. Self confidence is also inspired by thinking of a place where he is calm and can do anything.

  32. When Bagger Vance speaks to Juhan in the first clip he stops him from cheating and gives him back his focus and confidence which are two of the rooms in the house of mental toughness. After a bad shot Junah’s ball is in the woods and he has a very difficult shot to make it to the green. When Junah begins to break down and question himself bagger Vance come and refocuses him so he can make the shot.
To teach the boy how to put bagger Vance tries to instill persistence and self-efficacy. He makes the boy continue swing even though he doesn’t have a ball and while he is swinging he builds his confidence. When the boy’s eyes are closed and once he has bought into the baggers teachings Vance places a ball in front of his putter and the boy hits the ball in the cup.

  33. In the movie Bagger vance We all know that ther were at lease two room in the house of mental toughness being used. What i want to point out is that with this help Junah's imagery made the space between trees bigger giving him a great confidence to believe in himself. When Bagger was teaching the lil boy to put he showed him that its inside you you just have to find it.

  34. in the first movie clip Bagger Vance helps junah use his sence of imagery was one room in the house of mental toughness to hit the shot out of the wood instead of cheating to win the match. the second movie clip ofthe litte boy getting mad and losing focus Bagger Vance helpsthe boy focus and tells him "it in you....find it"and the little boys enjoys the results after he started to focus again by maing the shot.
