sportsmanship, fair play and gamesmanship
In class today we discussed sportsmanship, fair play, and gamesmanship. Further I presented some examples of each in practice. Paul Brown and the sowing of the footballs on the jerseys, my buddy Coach Nick and the kicking tee, and the West Point football player who 'told on himself' after he ran out of bounds, nullifying a touchdown for Army. Cite two examples of sportsmanship, fair play, and gamesmanship from your own personal experience with sport or from sport experiences that you have observed as a spectator/fan.

1)Watching a highschool baseball player admit that he did not catch the ball when the umpire had actually called the batter out.
ReplyDelete2)Watching basketball players admit that they commited the foul instead of letting someone else take the blame for it.
1) Watching a tennis player admit the ball bounced twice in tennis when he returned the ball and would have gotten a winner.
ReplyDelete2) When I lost by 00:00.12 seconds at the state championships in the 100 backstroke by an individual that was only a freshman while I was a senior, but I still shook her hand sincerely and smiled at my parents as I was standing on the second place spot of the podium.
1) In a heat of the 100m at our valley high school championships, there were 4 guys with the same jersey and 4 others. There had already been a false start and if there was one more, that person would be disqualified. The starter was a little older with not the greatest eye sight and ended up blaming the second false start on the wrong guy. His team mate who was expected to win and move on, quickly admitted it was him who had made the second false start and was disqualified instead. He was true to himself and fair to his team mate.
ReplyDelete2) At our regional figure skating championships I had an amazing skate, landed everything, and won the artistic award but the judges placed me second to a girl who spent more time on her butt then she did on her feet. I was a little disappointed but I still congratulated the winner with a smile and a hug.
1)I was playing center field in a Legion baseball game in high school when a kid hit a ball off the light pole just above the fence. The ball came back into play so I threw it in to 2nd base, where the umpire called the runner out. The other coach went crazy and the umpire came out to ask me if it was a home run or not and I couldn't lie, I had to tell him it was.

1) During a softball tournament I was watching a game and I watched a batter bunt the ball. The ball rolled just outside of the foul line. The third baseman charged forward and threw the ball and the batter was safe. The team's coach that was up to bat told the umpire that the ball went outide the foul line and the batter had to come back and re-bat.
ReplyDelete2) During the state chamionship game my hockey team was tied with our in state rival. We had to go to a shoot out and we lost by one goal. After the game even though all of my teammates and myself were in tears we shook the winning team's hands and told them great game.
1)In volleyball the referees do not see everything just like any game. I remember not getting called for touching the ball on a block. I knew I touched the ball. There was a debate going on between a player and the referee. Although I wanted us to get the point, I did touch the ball so I just went and told the ref so we could continue the game.
ReplyDelete2) In the last intramural basketball game I played, I ended up on the ground with another player fighting for a jump ball. After the referee blew his whistle I got up and offered to help the other player up.
I clear remember when was my last year of high school I broke the national record of 800 in one competition before of the high school nationals , therefore I was the favorite to win the highschool nationals. But that day I did not perform well so I was beat for a freshman runner so I got the second position . I did was angry with him I was angry with myself, so I told him congratulation .
ReplyDeletePlaying soccer in tournament a guy from the another team the make a fault against of my teammates , but the referee did not realize that fault, but that soccer player admitted that he made a fault and give the ball to the my team
1) Two years ago, in a 3-on-3 summer basketball tournament my brothers and I were playing in the championship game of the 6'1 and under division. We were playing the returning champs (a team from Spokane) and I purposely fouled another player who had a wide open layup via a backdoor cut. The referee wasn't even paying attention(If anyone has ever competed in a 3-on-3 tourney, this might sound familiar) and he called the ball out of bounds in our favor. I confronted the ref about not paying attention then admitted to him that I fouled him.
ReplyDelete2) Similar to instance above, in college I committed a hard but legal foul on another player who had an open layup late in a close game. Instead of standing over him, I helped him up and told him "good take".
When you are playing match and sometimes you win or lose but you still have to be nice to your opponent either you loosing or winning. Do not cheat and say thanks to the opponent after the match.
ReplyDeleteOnce I was playing the tennis match and Referee called out for the opponent but I saw that the ball was in and so I said the ball was in.Referee corrected it and that girl said “thank you” and I felt very good what I did.
During the state tournament i had a many experiences from fair play, sportsmanship, and gamesmanship.
ReplyDeleteIn the semifinal game, we upset the team heavily favored to win the title that year in overtime on a controversial call by the refs. After alot of discussing, they made the right call. The other fans and players were really upset. The players and coachs should great sportsmanship and shook our hands and werent poor losers. BUt the fans tried starting a fight with our team on its way to the vans out of the locker rooms. I thought that was very immature of them, and didnt show very good gamesmanship and sportsmanship for the game of basketball.
when i played baseball in high school we had an outfielder who would dive for fly balls and although he didn't catch it he could make it seem like he had and i never saw an umpire that didn't fall for it.
ReplyDeleteI saw on an ESPN highlight real while playing in a college softball game a girl hit her first home run ever and while rounding first tore a ACL and so the first baseman and the short stop from the opposing team carried her around the bases.
1. When an volleyball player touches the net on a block and the ref doesn't see it..she calls it on herself and
ReplyDelete2. when you win or lose to a team you shake their hands under the net and congratulate them.
An example of fair play and sportsmanship in my life was in a golf tournament in Arizona My dad, his friend bob and i were playing a scramble for huge prizes and on the 18th hole my ball moved and i had to tell on my self. another example was when playing basketball at the gym if you knock the ball out of bounds you have to own up to it and that is what i do every time

1. When one of my friends admited that he went out of bounds when playing volleyball.
ReplyDelete2. Shaking my cousin's hand after the biggest rivalry game and lost by 2 points.

1. everytime i've been to fresno to play their fans are brutal. they smack talk, throw things, spit at you, the list goes on. they dont show much class but it does make for a good atmosphere!
ReplyDelete2. my senior year in high school football, we were playin the only other undifeated team in our conference. they haven't beatin us ever since we joined their conference as matter of fact we have never lost to anyone in the conference. so anyways they were from a small town and all the news papers were saying that we were not ready for an opponent like them and that they were shutting down there town so everyone could go to the game. their players were talking smack well once the game started we crushed them but through out the whole game they were trash talking left and right. if they were able to tackle us they would create a pile and punch and twist the ankles of our players. we ended up beating them like 70 something to 7 but they did not show any class what so ever.

ReplyDelete1. In golf, there are many rules that players have to follow. One time, when I was playing in a tournament the committee showed my score on the leader board stating that I shot a 69. But I actually shot a 70, so I had to declare the wrong score and I made myself to be disqualified.
ReplyDelete2. I played in one of the biggest, important national junior events last year called the U.S. Junior Boys Championship. Tiger woods won this championship three consecutive times when he was younger. I was playing extremely well, beating other players since it is a match play event, and when I finally lost in the quarterfinals, all I did was shake the other players hand and said "congratulations and good luck for the rest of the championship."
1)There was a ball hit down the line in a game and the player was directly over the ball going right over the third base bag. There was only one umpire so he couldnt see it very well from home with a right handed batter in the box. The umpire called it foul but the third basemen told him it was fair and the batter was awarded first base.
ReplyDelete2)I remember shaking hands with the opposing team after every baseball game i played.
1. after are championchip game in the final sec of the game my quarterback ran it in for the winning touchdown... after he scored the crowed and side lined went nuts but as for me being one of the caption on the team out of respect for the opponent team when we recieved our cif title award I made sure as a team we were very calm and respectful.
ReplyDelete2.at the end of the game we both shook hands and cheered for each team..
Shaking hands after game would be a good example of sportsmanship. Also trying to keep the game as far is possible.
ReplyDeletein our championship game we played a team tough team for the second night in a row an it was a battle once again. The game was tied down to the last sec, we had the ball with 5.1 sec ledt an my teammate went to the basket hard and gott fouled an made the basket, but the guy on the other team had good sportsmanship an helped him up an told him good shot even tho it was a important game..
ReplyDelete2) After a very heated game everyone shook hands..
After we lost the the state championship my team showed great sportmanship and gamesmanship by shaking hands with the other team. It was interesting how the team was going to act when we lost because we were not used to losing. we never lost all year. but we did show great sportmanship by congradulating the other team.
ReplyDeleteI guess something that I have seen in games when an opposing teams player falls on the floor, another player from the opposing side picks him up . Basically I think that shows that when someone is down you don,t see the other color jersey you just see someone who needs to be picked up.
ReplyDeleteAnother example is when you know you did something wrong like your out in baseball and you just call yourself out.
1.)during the state championship basketball game my senior year in high school, me and a player from the other team got into a little physical play while boxing out for a rebound and resulted in us both receiving fouls and we almost got into a fight, but afterwards we shook hands and explained to each other that it wasn't anything personal just being competitive.
ReplyDelete2.)i was watching a basketball game the other night between the Rockets and Jazz, and Ronnie Brewer was fouled hard by Chuck Haynes but instead of a confrontation, they just settled it by shaking hands, and Haynes let him know that he wasn't trying to be a dirty player just trying to prevent an easy basket.
1) In basketball for instance when your teammate foul you quickly go help him up and make sure that he is alright.
ReplyDelete2) The only thing to do is congratulating the opponent team either a good win or good effort during the game or competition.
Sports are fun but the game should be played with sportsmanship and fair play. For instance if you playing a game of football and you opponent is on the ground after the play you should not hit them when there down. Also when playing congrualate your opponent.
ReplyDeleteBrandon Brown
sports should always be played with sportmanship, because if not your only huritng yourself. you should also be honest when you play sports, because thats what you would expect from your teammates and challengers.
ReplyDelete1.)Our goalie in hockey admitted that the other team scored after the ref said no-goal.The ref called that way because he couldn't see it, but he(our goalie) told the truth anyways.
ReplyDelete2.) In hockey, a player knocked an opposing player into the boards head first. the opposing player was slow to get up, but was fine. The player who gave the hit waited around after the play had gone down the ice to make sure the opposing player he knocked down was alright.
sportsmanship should be exercised when playing because it gives the sport "class". You're not out there to hurt each other or to be dishonest. You're out there to compete. By being a good sport you are playing with respect for that specific sport, as well as your opponent.
1) in the NBA when a player commits a foul and it might be unsure of the number of the player who commited to willingly raises his hand to the ref. to let him know he did it.

sports are played for two reason.. to win and to have fun... if your not playing the game for those two reason, you shouldnt play at all... i believe sportsmenship, fairplay, and gamesmenship go hand in hand with why i think we play sports.
1. when a player fouls another player really hard but its unintentional and he hels him up after he fouled him that hard.

1. After winning our first Wac conference game in almost 2 years, the football team and our fans in the stadium excitedly celebrated, with almost every fan jumping out the stands and on to the field. When the final second hit 0 and our win was secure, however, the first thing I did was walk over to the New Mexico state sideline and shook their hands.
ReplyDelete2. In soccer, when a player goes down by injury, if the team of that opposing player has possesion, they'll kick the ball out of bounds to stop play so the player can be attended to. Once he is taken care of, the team of the injured player will kick the ball back to the opposing team and give them possesion back. This displays great sportsmanship and fair play.
I can recall this one play, when I was playing D-end I had a clean release off the tackle and a perfect shoot at the quarter back. I ended up hitting right as he released ball, I hit him so hard that he got knocked out. It was a perfectly legal hit, yet I still felt bad. After the game I went to him apologized for what had happened which was the right thing to do.
ReplyDeleteIt was a close game of basketball to our rival school and it was late in the game. The ref was calling the game their way the whole time. Finally with about a minute left the guy called a foul which ended up costing us the game. It was a horrible call and everyone knew it. A couple days after coach turned in the tape he apologized for the call and admitted it was a bad call.
1. An example sportsmanship, fair play, and gamesmanship, is when I am at the Student recreational center playing basketball and there are no referees. You have to call your own fouls and you have to play by the rules even know there isn’t any referees.
ReplyDelete2. Another personal example is after we won a close game with our rival high school they still had the courage to come shake our hands and tell us good game. I thought this was a great way for them to show sportsmanship
1. An example of bad sportsmanship that I have been a part of is when we beat this private catholic school in the semifinal baseball game to put us in the championship. After the game they wouldn’t even shake our hands. We won the game 4-1.
ReplyDelete2. A positive example that I have been involved in was in the State Championship basketball game my Junior Year of high school. We were winning the whole first half with a 10 point lead at half time. We got out scored 21-4 in the third quarter and ended up losing the game 56-50 in front of our biggest crowd. The game was on T.V. at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis. After the game everyone was really upset with the loss but still had the support from the fans with a standing ovation. Our whole team also shook every one of the other team’s hands after the game.
1.during a heated rival game i help a player up after a great hit is and example of sportmanship.
ReplyDelete2.also good sportmanship is when teams shake hands after a game no matter what the score of the game is..
when i played a game against fresno state the crowed was brutal. from talkin to throwing things ect. i understand thats there team and they do it so get in the other teams head but it doesnt show much class.
ReplyDeletei seen during the play offs there was hella hard fouls mad but i also see some of the guys get helped up by eachother
1.) watchint someone tell the reff that his foot was on the line instead of taking the three point shot.
